Bible Study: 1 Timothy 3 - Leadership

May 27, 2018

Timothy was a leader, but he was also:

1. young,

2. timid/shy

3. mixed-race

Q. What/who is a leader?

Someone who takes charge of a group of people.

Someone who has authority.

Someone who can manage and bring order to things.

A leader brings direction and vision.

Q. Why are parents leaders?

Parents are role models, they bring up and manage their children, raise them and lead by an example.

Read Luke 2:41

"Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they travelled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man."

Q. What are some the positive things about being a leader?

-You can change someones life.

-You can raise other leaders

Q. What are some of the challenges of being a leader?

-Your weaknesses, vulnerabilities and flaws are on show

-You are judged on a stricter standard than non-leaders

-You are constantly in the spot-light

Q. How would the enemy respond to someone who wants to change lives?

The enemy would find it easier to attack the leader, because if the leader falls so could all the followers.

Q. What is the secret to leadership?

- The key is having the relationship with others and with God

-Completely relying on God, and not on your own judgement/intellect/logic, no matter how many times you have done something before

-Being intimate with God

-Having someone you are accountable to (someone who is also a leader and believer)
